Emergency Dentistry

Emergency dentistry is urgent care for dental problems that cannot wait. This includes severe toothaches, broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, lost crowns or fillings, swelling, infection, bleeding, and dental trauma.

Emergency dentistry may help with:

  • Severe tooth pain that wakes you at night
  • Broken, cracked, or chipped teeth
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Lost crowns, fillings, or temporary restorations
  • Gum or facial swelling
  • Dental abscesses
  • Trauma after a fall, accident, or sports injury

The first goal is to identify the source of the problem, relieve pain, and stabilize the tooth or infection.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment removes infected or dying nerve tissue from inside a tooth, disinfects the canals, and seals the tooth so it can be saved instead of extracted.

Root canal treatment may be recommended for:

  • Severe throbbing toothache
  • Lingering pain after hot or cold exposure
  • Pain when biting on one specific tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum
  • Swelling or tenderness near a tooth
  • Deep decay reaching the nerve
  • A cracked tooth with nerve involvement
  • A tooth that has darkened compared with nearby teeth

Root canal therapy is often the conservative option because it allows the natural tooth to stay in place.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of the mouth. They often appear in the late teens or early twenties. Some wisdom teeth can stay if they are healthy, fully erupted, and easy to clean. Others need removal because they are impacted, infected, decayed, painful, or damaging nearby teeth.

Wisdom teeth removal may be recommended for:

  • Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw
  • Repeated swelling around a partially erupted wisdom tooth
  • Gum infection around the wisdom tooth
  • Decay in a wisdom tooth that cannot be restored predictably
  • Damage or decay on the neighboring second molar
  • Impacted wisdom teeth visible on X-ray
  • Cyst formation around an unerupted tooth

Not every wisdom tooth needs removal. We evaluate first and recommend treatment only when it is genuinely needed.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

If a tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, not the root. Keep it moist in milk if available and call immediately.

If your face or gum is swollen, call as soon as possible, especially if the swelling is spreading.

If a tooth is broken, rinse gently and avoid chewing on that side.

If a crown comes off, keep the crown and bring it to your visit.

If you have a toothache, do not place aspirin directly against the gum. This can burn the tissue.

If bleeding occurs after trauma, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze and call for instructions.

What to Expect

Your visit begins with a focused exam. The goal is to identify the exact source of pain, infection, or trauma and determine whether the tooth can be saved.

Your emergency or surgical visit may include:

  1. A call to describe the problem, pain level, and swelling or trauma
  2. Triage and scheduling during office hours
  3. Focused exam and X-ray to identify the source
  4. Immediate pain relief or stabilization when possible
  5. Treatment such as medication, temporary repair, root canal therapy, drainage, or extraction when needed
  6. A written estimate and clear follow-up plan
  7. Final restoration, healing check, or monitoring depending on the case

Insurance & Financing

Renov Dental Group accepts most major PPO dental insurance plans. Emergency exams, X-rays, root canals, extractions, crowns, and wisdom teeth removal may have different coverage depending on your plan.

Before follow-up treatment, our team verifies your benefits and explains your estimated out-of-pocket cost in writing. Cherry financing is available for qualified patients who prefer monthly payment options.

FAQ

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe tooth pain, swelling, infection, broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, lost crowns, uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma should be evaluated promptly.

Can a root canal stop tooth pain?

Yes. If the pain is caused by infected or inflamed nerve tissue inside the tooth, root canal treatment removes the source of the pain and helps save the tooth.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

No. Healthy, fully erupted, well-positioned wisdom teeth may be monitored. Removal is usually recommended when they are impacted, infected, decayed, painful, or damaging nearby teeth.

Will I get treatment the same day?

The first visit focuses on diagnosis and pain relief. Same-day treatment is provided when possible, but some cases require staged care.

Should I go to the ER for tooth pain?

For most dental pain, a dentist is the right place to start. However, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, fever with rapidly spreading swelling, or severe facial trauma should be treated as a medical emergency.

Does insurance cover emergency dentistry, root canals, or extractions?

Coverage varies by plan and procedure. Renov Dental Group verifies PPO benefits and explains estimated costs before follow-up treatment.
